Shelter in Place Alarm

A shelter in place incident is a potentially threatening situation on campus that involves dangers outside of our building. For example, 1) an active shooter elsewhere on campus, 2) a fire or storm, or 3) an outdoor airborne hazardous materials release. Shelter in place means you should STAY PUT.

You will be able to tell the Shelter in Place alarm apart from a fire alarm because it is a wailing siren, as opposed to staccato blaring. ALSO, it will originate from outside the building instead of inside.

The Shelter in Place sirens are tested at noon on the first Wednesday of every month. At ALL other times when you hear the sirens, follow these procedures:

• Stay inside!
• If patrons try to exit the building, inform them that the alarm means they are advised to stay in the inside, and they may be in danger if they leave. Once warned, the patron can leave if they'd like, at their own risk.
• If you experience an immediate threat or safety concern please, use your judgment to close and lock the doors if you are concerned about a person or a group of people with the intent to be destructive or violent and do not have time to confer with your supervisor. Do not put yourself in harm's way. Call 911 or press the panic button if needed. 
• If you're not sure what is going on, don't lock the doors unless you receive instructions. We want patrons to be able to come into our building to escape whatever threat is outside, as long as we can do so without endangering those already inside. The lock down order should come from the Chancellor.
• Stay informed. You can visit berkeley.edu, listen to KALX 9037 or call 800-705-9998 for updates. Security will be corresponding with campus emergency personnel and will update you as well.
• Wait for information and be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice.
• The cabinet in the Human Resources hallway has enough food and supplies for 50 days, so you should be set if you're stuck there for a while.
