Student Aides ok to enter Moffitt

Students with disabilities are allowed to bring their assistants (generally called 'aides') with them when entering Moffitt Library, even if the aide does not have an ID.  In many cases these aides do not have specific paperwork or other ID to show so we have to be more creative. If a patron with a UC ID comes to the desk (could be a student, faculty, staff, etc) and identifies the person with them an their aide, guide, or other kind of assistant (but that person does not have their own ID) here are the best steps:

1) If the UC ID patron has a disability that is easy to discern (e.g. blindness, mobility impairment), we will accept their word about their guide's role and allow both people to enter.

2) If the UC ID patron does not have a clear disability, we should ask: "Can you describe the tasks that this aide will perform with you?"  Note that we are NOT ALLOWED to ask what the person's disability is directly.  The answer generally will clarify what the UC ID patron's limitation is and how the aide helps mitigate that -- such as "I can't read the page and my aide reads selections to me."  Any logical answer is fine and we will allow both people to enter.

If the answer seems odd, still let them in, and you can write down the name and ID number of the patron and the name of their aide.  That information should be passed to the Info Desk supervisor, who will confirm with the Disabled Students Program that they are indeed confirmed as eligible.
