You can easily identify the evacuation alarm by its piercing, repetitive blaring, accompanied by strobe lights. It is so annoying that patrons will likely start leaving the building on their own. Another identifying characteristic of the evacuation alarm is that it will be going off throughout the whole building that you are in, whether it is Doe, Moffitt or the Stacks.
As a side note, if you hear a localized alarm going off (just in one area and without strobe lights), it is going off because a patron exited out of an Emergency Exit door. Please do not say "Fire Alarm" when you radio security because they will rush over preparing to evacuate the building, when all they have to do is turn a key on the door.
Follow these procedures:
1. Take the radio and step outside, in front of the entry doors. Direct patrons out, and do not allow anyone to enter. If patrons argue about leaving, you can inform them that entering the building during a fire alarm is considered trespassing. If the alarm is going off in one building (Doe, Moffitt or Stacks), it does not necessarily mean that it is going off in all three. So for example, if the alarm is just going off in the Stacks, people could relocate to Doe or Moffitt unless an alarm is going off there also. Library staff may ask you where the Emergency Assembly Areas are, where they will wait until the building has been cleared. Refer to this map to tell them where to go, depending on what building you are in.
Each desk is equipped with a safety vest.
Please put it on during an emergency!
2. NOTIFY the appropriate parties. If you are at North or Moffitt, call the workleader. If you are the workleader, you will need to use the phone list at the desk to notify each number listed in the green emergency box. IF IT IS THE WEEKEND OR AFTER 5PM, the workleader will notify all parties on the Night/Weekend Notification Matrix. A laminated copy of this matrix can also be found in the stand-up file at the Doe South Info Desk.
3. GUARD the perimeter. Allow only emergency response personnel to enter the building. For the Main Stacks, please guard the door leading into Main Stacks to ensure that people are not entering. However, do not put yourself in danger. If you are guarding the doors and you see flames, move to a safe distance.
4. CLEAR the entryway. People should not be gathered around the entrance because the entryway needs to be clear so the fire department can enter quickly. We will need to get approval from the fire department before we re-enter the building.
5. WAIT for instructions to re-enter. People cannot re-enter the building unless you get instructions from Facilities, Security, the Head of Access Services (Mark), or the Fire Department. First you should hear something like, "Staff clear for re-entry." Library staff will be allowed to enter first, so they can make it back to their posts before patrons enter the building. Once you hear "ok to reoccupy," inform everyone that they are now allowed in and take your seat at the Info Desk. If the radio person skips "Staff clear for re-entry" by mistake, tell everyone that staff can re-enter first, and then allow everyone else to enter after a minute. At Moffitt, we will need to re-check all ID's as folks re-enter. Ask Circulation to help check ID's at Moffitt, as there will be a large influx of people.
6. WRITE an Incident Report. Only one person needs to do this, so be sure to coordinate with the other Info Desk workers to determine who will submit the report.
