Printing Problems after-hours...What is to be done?

Kai had an interesting interaction with a patron which is a good opportunity to discuss what can be done when Scan to Print stations misbehave after normal copy center hours:

"This evening, a student accidentally swiped her card several times while trying to print on the 3rd floor in Moffitt Library.  It was her first time printing, and she was trying to print out several pages.  Instead, the printer printed the job multiple times, resulting in a sizeable stack of paper and charge of approximately $200.  She talked to the Moffitt circulation desk, and they referred her to the Library Copy Center.  Unfortunately, the copy center was closed at the time.  I advised her to come back the next day as soon as the Copy Center opens..."

Basically, Kai made a good educated guess about how to proceed, once the copy center is closed she can not get credits/reprints done in real time; coming back the next day would be the only way to address the inquiry.

The best thing is simply to refer her to Copy Center (if open) or ask her to come back the next day (if copy center closed).  For your information, the copy center will only give credits or reprints they do not give cash reimbursement.

Ultimately, our role at the Infodesks are limited regarding print stations, since we can not physically go to the print stations and assist.  Troubleshooting requests should be referred to the nearest circulation/reference desk where the students/staff can leave their desks to help resolve the users' impasse; or referred to copy center for a reprint/print credit.
