If the package is for the library call Sam Arrow, the interim Mail Supervisor, and inform him that a package has arrived and direct the driver to the loading dock at Moffitt Library. The mail room is on the 2nd floor of Moffitt. Please note that Sam is not here on evenings or weekends. If it is after 5pm or on the weekend, tell the courier that they need to deliver Monday through Friday during normal business hours.
If it is for a specific person, then it should be delivered when that person's office is open.
At no point in time should you be accepting any sort of delivery, package, paperwork, or sundry items at the InfoDesks (except lost and found items, of course).
Ultimately, by accepting any item you are taking implicit personal "responsibility" for the item individually, and by extension, making the InfoDesks responsible for the completion or resolution of this transaction. Since our infodesks are thoroughfares for the public, their actual destination (and that of their business) is likely further INSIDE the Library and individuals should be referred to a better receiving destination. The problem with accepting materials is largely a continuity and timeliness one. If you accept some item, note or package, but run out of time in your shift to properly deliver it, it may get lost or mishandled by the next person; furthermore, the time lost in us acting as middle-man for the delivery of whatever parcel unnecessarily delays possible transactions which may be time sensitive (e.g. a recalled book, or "unregistered" student payment to re-ignite access).
Furthermore, do NOT allow people to leave their personal belongings in your possession, nor leave them unattended in the portal spaces you look after. Think of your spaces as the airport, no unattended belongings should be left in these spaces. This is both for your own safety and that of other users; as well as hampered by the same continuity and "ownership" issues described with accepting materials above. If there is a bag that can not be accounted for in public spaces for more than 10 minutes, I need you to contact security to come and investigate the item(s), so they may locate it's owner and/or triage it's disposal.
