Photography and Filming in the Library

The official policy may be located here, it is comprehensive and worth reading all the way through at least one time.

Regarding non-professional, one-time visitors, the below should suffice to cover the rules of use for the Doe/Moffitt complex, for those just capturing personal tour moments:

Personal photography and filming Individuals visiting the libraries are welcome to take a few photographs or make short video clips for personal use without advance permission, except where signs are posted prohibiting this (for example, Morrison Library).  All such activities must be carried out so as not to disturb library users or staff. The following are not permitted: use of flash, tripods, or other equipment that might cause a distraction or obstruction; blocking stairwells or exits, or otherwise impeding traffic; moving or climbing on library furniture or equipment; and taking close-up pictures of individuals without their assent.

Alternately, more formal/professional film crews or organizations looking to capture the Library's image and reproduce for non-personal use should be questioned about authority to take photos/film in the locations.  This is your responsibility if it is happening near your infodesk.  In most all of the cases, those who have authorization in advance will have a confirmation email from the Library Events Coordinator or you will receive notification in your email inbox from the Info Desk Supervisor. Sometimes the crew will be accompanied by Library Communications staff, who can show you the badge here to prove their status.

If you are not sure, feel free to call the Library Events Coordinator at 510-664-7737 to verify the crews' claim, or the Info Desk Supe if you can not reach them.

Those who do not have proper pre-authorization should be advised that they must contact the Library Communications Office in person at 132 Doe Library, by phone at 510-664-7737, or email the Library Events Coordinator directly at libraryevents@berkeley.edu for authorization to proceed.  If they persist without authorization, politely ask them to desist, if they still persist, contact Security to resolve and prepare an incident report.
