It's a very, very, very rare situation to have no security around during closing hours. However, seeing as it happened once, I worked out a plan with security on what to do in the event no one is there when we're closing Doe. I'll update with Moffitt if need be, although security is usually there by that time even in the worst cases.
Step 1: Close Doe North
We'll close Doe North as normal, and be sure to put the garbage cans in front of the doors.
Step 2: Radio and Lock
The person closing Doe North will let Doe South know it's closed via radio. Lock Doe South as
usual, and usher people out that exit as normal.
Step 3: Have one person sweep
The person who closed Doe North will take their radio and begin to usher people out of the Library. We tell them that Doe is closed, and that they can exit through the south end of Doe, closer to Wheeler Hall. While there's no exact science to sweeps, best practice is to sweep the floors in the following order:
- 2nd
- 1st
- 3rd
- 4th
We want to make sure all patrons leave before moving onto the next floor, to the best of our ability.
Security will do more thorough checks later on in that event.
Leave them a note at the desk mentioning what was done, and send a message to your supervisor
as well.
