No headphones/earbuds while at work!

This has come up multiple times this week, so I just want to be very clear with everybody that headphones and earbuds are not allowed while at work. This includes having even a single earbud in one ear.

This rule is in place because one of our primary goals is to answer patron questions. It is extremely important that we maintain body language that invites patrons to approach us for help. We never want patrons to feel like they are interrupting, which is why we must promptly set aside other tasks and why we cannot wear headphones/earbuds at the desk.

Additionally, we need to always be alert for security purposes. We must be listening for patrons entering/exiting, door alarms, book alarms, radio communications, phone calls, etc. If you have headphones/earbuds on, I can only assume you are not paying attention.

You will receive a warning after the first offense. A second offense will be grounds for dismissal. I would hate to lose any of you over this, so please avoid temptation by putting away these devices while on the clock!
