In preparation for the summer (tourist) months, here are some questions you might get from patrons!
Q: How many books are in your library?
A: There are over 2.3 million books shelved in the stacks out of Berkeley's 11 million volumes. The rest are stored in other libraries and at the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF).
Q: When was the library built?
A: The original Doe was built in 1911, and the Doe Annex was added in 1950. Moffitt was built in 1970. The underground stacks were built in 1994.
Q: How many UCB libraries are there?
A: Tour groups usually say 27, but this depends on your definition of a library, so you may hear different numbers around campus. (For example, Morrison is considered its own library even though it is inside of Doe.)
You might consider directing patrons to the UC Berkeley Library History display, which is in the hallway that goes from Doe North to the stacks. There is also a website of library history, which contains the same information as the displays in the hallway.
