If a patron tries to hand you a laptop to turn in after Circulation is closed (or ever, really), tell them that it is against policy for you to take it.
Here's what usually happens when we take laptops:
- You lock it up securely in Doe South cabinet
- Workleader comes in the morning and does not notice it right away
- Patron gets a larger fine because we turned it in for them at 11am instead of 9am
- Patron complains at Privileges Desk
Please don't put us in this situation. Let the patron take responsibility for the laptop overnight.*
Also, if they are asking about billing policies, tell them that you do not know but they can ask at the Privileges Desk in the morning. Please don't give them false hope by suggesting that their fines might be waived - stay out of the fray and keep repeating that they will have to talk to Privileges.

* That being said, if the person is going to get on a plane for another country in one hour, then it's better that we take it. But this is a rare circumstance! If this happens, lock it up in the Doe South cabinet overnight and tape a piece of paper to the Doe South computer monitor with instructions to the morning workleader. You should also let the patron know that you're leaving a note for the next person, but that it's ultimately still on their account until it gets to Circulation. If they are not happy with this, they can send a friend to return the laptop for them first thing in the morning.
