First and foremost, the principal adult MUST have a library card or access pass, or no one is getting in. If the adult needs to procure a pass you may want to revert back to processes described in the Moffitt InfoDesk - "I forgot my ID" posting.
If a minor comes to the library, unaccompanied and can not document they are over 18 years old with a reason to be in the collection, they will not be able to enter the Main Stacks, full stop, no exceptions.
Furthermore, if the minor looks under 13, you should inquire where their parents are and offer to help locate if they are lost of without a guardian.It is not uncommon for high school students from local schools to come to Moffitt Library looking to do some research for a paper; they will be unable to do this in the Main Stacks without an accompanying card-carrying adult. During normal weekday Reference hours (M-F 10a-6p) you may suggest they go up to 2nd Floor Doe to see if any of the reference collections or e-resources may suffice as sources for their high school project.
DO NOT imply that they will be able to get an access pass as a minor; quite the opposite, you should be explicit minors are not allowed in unaccompanied and that they will not be entering the Main Stacks alone.
If a minor comes to the Library under the supervision of a proper card-holding parent/guardian and they affirm they will be staying together you may allow the minor into the collection.Parents may not leave their kids outside the gates "for just a minute"; and you should never offer or accept any responsibility for minors left outside.
If you get someone contentious that wants to "see the policy"; please offer them my card, advise them they may contact me and politely refuse entry.
