Desktop and shared workspaces...

Please keep in mind, while you are encouraged to utilize the provided computers for your work, and allowed to also use them for non-distracting personal asides, they are not YOUR computers, they are shared space, and much like the physical space should be respected as the "commons".  When someone leaves a mess, someone else has to deal with it, clutter accumulates, and the place looks unprofessional.  I mean this both on and around the computer.

Regarding the computer (all locations):
  • No one should be saving things to the computers, if you have to as part of a process, DELETE IT before you walk away from the computer.
  • Maintain computer desktop discipline - DELETE non-work related files on the desktop; if you are workleader for a shift, one of your jobs is keeping the desktop clear.
  • The wallpaper should be solid, static, and boring...You guys all have computers and personal electronics you are welcome to tailor to your personal proclivities, but the Infodesk computers should be simple, plain, boring and easy to identify where the few icons and recycling bin are located.

Regarding the physical space (all locations):
  • No clutter (e.g. magazines, daily cals, schoolwork etc.) at the desks, if you arrive and someone else is leaving ask them if the stuff is theirs, if not, just throw away/recycle.
  • There are hanging file folders at DoeSouth and Moffitt for all of the paper products such as maps etc.  If they are laying all around the desk, please aggregate and put away.  DoeNorth, does not have files so maps should be kept in the "in-box" looking wood containers.
  • A clean space looks professional and projects being in control to the public, when we are sloppy in public, we also have to look through mess to get answers, this is not our intended outcome.

Shared Workspaces
In keeping with the above themes regarding cleanliness, clutter and the like.  It should be noted that all aspects of the workspaces are shared: physical, temporal and emotional.

If you are messy it makes others either live with a mess or clean up after you, not very thoughtful.
If you take a long break, you are effectively making someone else do your job, also not very thoughtful.
If you are short with your coworkers/public, passive-aggressive, or petty with your coworkers, you make for a hostile work environment, something I can not let stand...and it's again, not very thoughtful.

So please just keep in mind that as a multi-person shift-based job complex, you are always working in shared space, and it is incumbent on all of you to continue going out of your way to make it pleasant for each other and functional for the public going forward.
