The Big Finals Post

With our 24 hour period approaching, it is more important now than ever for you to be doing your job of looking up at everyone who enters the building.

Crazy stuff tends to happen during finals, so here's some things to look for in the upcoming weeks.

Chickens

Yes, chickens. In the past, chickens have been let loose in the Main Stacks, meaning that someone got past the Info Desks carrying a chicken. This commonly occurs during RRR week, or the week before. If you hear clucking, ask to see the person's bag. (The Library Code of Conduct states that animals are not allowed in the building and that we may search bags with reasonable cause.) Call security if you have suspicions about someone's box or bag. I will buy you a nice dinner if you are the person to catch a chicken before it enters the library.

The Naked Run

The Naked Run is exactly what it sounds like - naked people running through the library. It usually happens on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday night of RRR week and starts around 9pm. If you see a large crowd gathering, call security. Usually take clothes off after showing ID's. Security needs to be notified so they can take their places next to the fire alarms to make sure we don't have any accidental pulls. All of you should be attentive to your post and continuing to check ID's, regardless of what shenanigans are going on around you. I don't want to hear from security that the extra has left the post to go watch the Naked Run.

Doe North Ledge

If a patron reports that people are on the ledge at Doe North (or you see it yourself), call security. It is not safe for patrons to be up there and is a liability issue for us.

Thieves

You see someone without a backpack who is circling around the library and something doesn't seem right. What do you do? Call security! Thieves know that the library is packed with distracted students during finals, and we need to notify security of any suspicious looking people so they can keep an eye on them and catch them if they try any funny business.

The Handoff

You may catch someone trying to hand their Cal1 card to a friend. Confiscate the card and deliver it to me. I will give them a warning when I return the card. You can give them my contact information if they are distressed about losing it. For more information, take a look at this blog post.

Food and Drink

People will try. Please pay close attention to users attempting to bring in drinks with unsecured lids (e.g. Starbucks/Jamba Juice type cups) and food into Doe and Main Stacks. Security will be sweeping the building with trash bags to catch people with food. 

Graduation Photos & Champagne

Graduation photos are ok to take in front of Doe North, but we have had ongoing problems with people popping champagne bottles and throwing confetti, which makes for a sticky mess that lasts all summer. To avoid this, please notify security as soon as you see folks taking photos so they can monitor and intervene if necessary.

Are pillows and sleeping bags allowed?

Yes, they are!
