Everyone, I understand that the policy hasn't been clear about vetting for bags. Mark and I have discussed and want to make sure we get all staff on the same page.
First and foremost, if a patron comes in holding a paper bag, they are good to go. No need to stop them. However, if they come in with food in plain sight, we do need to verify that they are staff before giving out bags.
To receive a bag, the patron must present a Staff, Faculty, or Academic Cal1 Card, or be able to answer the question, "Who is your supervisor?" (This is the same vetting process that we use for staff who want to enter the building before opening.) If you personally recognize the staff person, you can give them a bag, but be sure to mention that they will need to show ID for other Info Desk students (we certainly don't expect you to memorize the hundreds of staff members in the building). If a person wants to conceal the items in their own bag, that is fine too, as long as it will not spill (like coffee and other open beverages).
Mark is working on outreach to library supervisors to make sure that everyone is aware of the expectation, but you will still encounter surprised staff as you enforce this. If the staff member ignores you and walks past with food in sight, radio security to follow up with the patron.
